While everyone knows what stocks and shares are, the term ‘alternative investments’ can have some of us scratching our heads. This isn’t surprising given that there isn’t a concrete definition of alternatives – they can equally mean hedge funds or rare coin collections. It would seem easier to point out what alternative investments are not, rather than search for the words to define the term. Alternatives are not the commonly held assets that define global commerce in the past. Therefore, stocks and shares, as well as property funds and currency, do not fall under the ‘alternative’ umbrella.
